Expedition Leader / Small Expedition Cruise Ship—Alaska

    Orbridge is seeking experienced Expedition Leaders and Travel Directors who have extensive knowledge as naturalists, cultural experts, or destination specialists in Alaska, combined with the ability to handle inquisitive guests in a small group environment. Candidates should possess an all-around knowledge of the natural and cultural components of Southeast Alaska plus have excellent similar experience and skills to handle groups from a variety of organizations. Experience aboard a small ship is preferred.

    The Expedition Leader (EL) manages the day-to-day activities while supervising a team of two shipboard naturalist guides who lead hikes, kayak excursions, interpretive presentations, and skiff rides. The EL also oversees all special arrangements for groups.

    This position requires exemplary leadership, team building, management, and customer service skills.

    The EL is well-versed on destination topics including, natural and cultural history, local flora and fauna and topics ranging from geology, geography, marine biology and glaciology. The EL has experience leading groups on outdoor adventures and managing groups cooperatively.

    Essential Duties:

  • In collaboration with the Captain, onboard naturalists and hotel manager, provide program guiding, leadership and guest service.

  • Oversee execution of the daily expedition team’s plan, including timely departures and arrivals, safe and informative excursions, professional and educational interpretation in the field, formal onboard presentations, gear maintenance, and program reporting and preparation tasks.

  • Present lectures as agreed upon in program preparation discussions.

  • Provide necessary feedback to Orbridge Operations to ensure guest issues are handled in a timely and effective manner; be an active problem-solver.

  • Coordinate with local suppliers to support itinerary inclusions, including but not limited to programming, logistics, and scheduling of excursions and presentations; communicate the schedule in a clear manner to guests and crew.

  • Communicate with the ship’s leadership team regarding excursions, disembarkation, embarkation, guest concerns, group agent requests and onboard management issues.

  • Ensure timely delivery of daily and final weekly reports and guest lists to Orbridge Operations, and follow up on photo upload to Orbridge’s photo-sharing site.

  • Maintain and secure Orbridge supplies aboard the ship and notify Orbridge Operations of inventory.

  • Uphold company standards and policies, including meeting and/or exceeding guest expectations.

  • Maintain a professional demeanor with guests, crew, staff, group agents, officials, and the public at all times.


  • Required:
  • Valid Passport

  • Pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol test


  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science in natural and/or cultural history, or other relevant field of study or equivalent experience

  • Minimum one year of naturalist interpretation or environmental education in the field and formal presentations for groups

  • First Aid/CPR and Wilderness First Responder Certified

  • Prior small ship cruise industry experience

    We are seeking experienced Expedition Leaders, Travel Directors, and Expert Guides who have extensive knowledge as naturalists, cultural experts, or destination specialists combined with the ability to handle inquisitive guests in a small group environment.

    Candidates should possess an all around knowledge of the natural and cultural components that make up the various destinations we offer plus have excellent similar experience and skills to handle groups from a variety of organizations.

    Candidates will:

  • Provide Program Guiding, Leadership and Guest Service.

  • Present lectures as agreed upon between Orbridge and program partners in pre-program discussions.

  • Provide in-field interpretation as set forth in accordance with the program itinerary and guest inquiry.

  • Provide necessary feedback to Orbridge Operations to ensure guest issues are handled in a speedy and effective manner.

  • Coordinate with local suppliers to support itinerary inclusions.
