The Galapagos Islands – Western Itinerary

Wellness Protocol

We look forward to welcoming you on tour soon! We understand that traveling during these times requires additional preparation and planning in order to foster a healthy and safe on-tour experience for you and others on your tour. In addition to the standard Wellness Protocols that meet or exceed CDC recommendations and international travel industry guidelines in place for all Orbridge tours, the following are what you can expect on this tour.

This page is updated as new information becomes available from local, state, and international agencies. The environment for travel is constantly evolving, and as such, it is advised that you check this page regularly as well as the U.S. State Department's Travel website  to be aware of the most current information for your tour.

Please remember that Orbridge requires all guests to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and present proof of vaccination upon arrival on tour, regardless of age or specific requirements by country.

Upon arrival into Ecuador (and then to the Galapagos Islands), all visitors 3 years of age and older must:

    1. Provide a COVID-19 vaccination card with a QR code or a COVID-19 vaccination certificate showing the traveler received a complete series of the COVID -19 vaccine at least 14 days prior to entering Ecuador OR
    2. Provide proof of a laboratory-certified negative result of a RT-PCR or antigen COVID-19 test taken no more than 72 hours prior to boarding the flight to Ecuador AND
    3. Complete online and print to bring on the flight to Ecuador a Health Declaration Form (found via the link here or provided by your airline carriers' website).

Airlines will verify that travelers have met all requirements for travel before boarding at the point of origin.

Additionally, health officials will check travelers upon arrival for symptoms related to COVID-19. Any visitor entering Ecuador or Galapagos with suspected cases will be required to have an on-the-spot COVID test. Guests must await the results of the test at the airport or in quarantine. If the result is positive, the traveler will need to isolate for 10 days in an accommodation of their choice and at their expense. In the event that the COVID test result is negative, the traveler may continue with the trip. If you are entering Ecuador from another country other than the United States, you should check for specific requirements or restrictions with your airline carrier and embassy.

Guests who have been in the islands more than 2 days before the beginning of the cruise will be required to get a rapid antigen test before boarding the ship. This test will be paid for and performed by the operator's health staff before boarding.

Guests will be required to provide proof of travel insurance that includes travel medical coverage.  A copy of a travel insurance policy showing medical coverage is included (or a letter from the insurance carrier verifying medical coverage) will be necessary. Additionally, before the Galapagos flight, guests will complete online or at the airport a Galapagos Transit Control Card for entry. Our Ecuadorian ground team will be assisting guests as needed to ensure a smooth process.

If you are participating in the optional Mashpi Lodge Pre-Tour, the same vaccine documents will need to be provided prior to boarding your transfer to Mashpi Lodge.

Mask wearing is no longer obligatory in open or closed spaces anywhere in Ecuador (except for in the city of Guayaquil). Other needed exceptions to "no obligatory mask wearing" are for hospitals and medical facilities. Masks are still recommended on public transport, aboard planes, and while traveling on our shared transfers or transportation.

If you plan to arrive in Ecuador prior to the start of Orbridge tours or extend your stay in Ecuador and have made your own arrangements, it will be your responsibility to meet any COVID-19 vaccination or testing requirements.

If you are continuing to Peru from Ecuador for the Machu Picchu post tour, fully vaccinated travelers do not require further testing. (Ages 40 and over must be fully vaccinated plus have had a third booster to be considered fully vaccinated. Please see below).

Entry/Travel Restrictions for Peru:

Beginning January 27, 2022, individuals 40 and older must have received a third dose (booster) of the vaccine within at least 14 days prior to boarding a flight to Peru in order to be considered fully vaccinated. It is important to note that Orbridge requires all travelers to Peru be FULLY vaccinated. Due to current connecting air schedules from Ecuador to Peru, additional testing in place of the third dose (booster) will not be possible—therefore travelers 40 and older must also have had a third vaccine dose (booster) as required for entry to Peru.

Random testing may be required on arrival by the airport authorities. Additionally, the ground team will require testing on arrival for any guests presenting COVID-19 symptoms. This test, if needed, would be arranged by the team on the ground.

While traveling to and inside Peru, all individuals are required to wear a KN95 surgical type mask AND possibly a face shield in some businesses. Our ground team will have shields available in the event you do not have your own. If you do not have an approved mask, double masks will be required with one being a surgical type of mask in addition to a cloth mask. Cloth masks alone are not considered acceptable per Peru requirements.

Destination Specific Wellness Protocols

  • Note: The Galapagos Islands require all individuals to carry international travel insurance that provides medical benefits in another country in the event of a medical emergency or in case individuals are diagnosed with COVID-19 while visiting. Please contact your travel/medical insurance carrier specialist for international coverage questions or contact our Guest Services department at guestservices@orbridge.com for travel insurance provider recommendations.
  • Travelers 12 years of age and older with proof of vaccination may enter Peru without further testing requirements. Travelers 12 years of age and older who are not fully vaccinated must present a negative molecular COVID-19 test performed within 48 hours prior to boarding an incoming flight to Peru. Individuals 40 and older must have received their booster. All travelers must complete the required health affidavit.
  • In Peru, KN95 masks are required indoors throughout the country. If you do not have a KN95, double masking is mandatory, with one of the masks being a surgical mask (the other can either be cloth or surgical).
  • As of May 1, 2022, wearing a mask while outdoors is optional in areas with at least 80% of the over-60-years-of-age population fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (with three doses), and at least 80% of the over-12 -years-of-age population vaccinated with two doses. According to Peruvian health authorities, the areas that currently meet these criteria are:
  • Metropolitan Lima

  • Lima Provinces

Air Travel

  • Guests should log-in to their airline’s website/mobile app in advance of their flight to complete any health questions/documentation upload that is required by their airline. This can oftentimes be done in advance of checking in for the flight and arriving at the airport. Then, within 24 hours of your scheduled flight, log back into your airline’s website/mobile app to check in for your flight, check bags, and access boarding passes.
  • If you are continuing on to the Machu Picchu post-tour, all individuals are required to wear a KN95 surgical-type mask AND a face shield inside the airport and during flights to and within Peru. Cloth masks are not considered acceptable per Peru requirements.
  • Guests with symptoms who test and receive a positive COVID test at the end of the tour will need to quarantine at their own expense until a negative test result can be received.
  • Specific protocols and expectations for air travel vary by airline. Click here and scroll to the Air Travel Protocol section to learn more about airline protocols.
